Doing a Newfoundland

FINANCIAL TIMES 22. JÚLÍ 2011

- by Joseph Cotterill

1933

The Amulree Commission on a peripheral debt crisis, 1933:

No part of the British Empire has ever yet defaulted on its loan obligations; in the absence of any precedent, the consequences which would follow from a default by Newfoundland must remain to some extent a matter for speculation. But if no precedent can be drawn from the history of the Empire, instruction may be derived from the experiences of other countries, and it is clear from these that any play of default such as that outlined above could be approved with the greatest apprehension…

2011

The Brussels Summit on a peripheral debt crisis, 2011:

As far as our general approach to private sector involvement in the euro area is concerned, we would like to make it clear that Greece requires an exceptional and unique solution.

All other euro countries solemnly reaffirm their inflexible determination to honour fully their own individual sovereign signature and all their commitments to sustainable fiscal conditions and structural reforms. The euro area Heads of State or Government fully support this determination as the credibility of all their sovereign signatures is a decisive element for ensuring financial stability in the euro area as a whole.

THE INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY SUMMER 2003

- by David Hale

During the 1930s, long before the IMF, the British Empire coped with a debt crisis in a small country. This is a tale of the choice between debt and democracy. It shouldn’t be forgotten.

Hvað nú ef þeir eru ekki geðbilaðir?

Viðtal við Bernard Connolly sem var gestur á CNBC þann 16. maí 2013 - 5 mínútur og 31 sekúnda

Bein krækja (non Flash)

"A currency has meaning

because it expresses national monetary sovereignty. 14

The circumstances that might make a country want to give up its national monetary sovereignty irrevocably can never have anything rationally to do with economics - though the connection is often falsely made. A reason can be found only in politics or, more accurately, in the desire of certain groups of people to create, extend or buttress power for themselves at the expense of the electorates they are supposed to serve."

14. This would not be true of private currencies issued by private banks. Those who find national monetary sovereignty offensive yet still claim to favour a market economy should, logically, advocate private money, not European government money
