Ákvörðun Lettlands um að fella ekki gengi lats mun hafa þau áhrif að Lettland mun upplifa viðvarandi kreppu og verðhjöðnun á óheyrilegum skala. Capital Economics spáir 10% greiðslufalli á fjárskuldbindingum Letta. Spáin gerir ráð fyrir að það verði fyrst árið 2012 að hagvöxtur Lettland verði jákvæður aftur en muni þó ekki ná sér vel á skrið fyrr en árið 2014

Capital Economics: Latvia's GDP to fall by 20% within 2009-2010
The British analysts points out that Latvia's decision not to devalue its currency raises the prospect of a sustained period of deflation and deep recession, writesLETA.
As Capital Economics points out, the current recession in Latvia has its roots in the country's massive current account deficit, which is indicative of an overvalued real exchange rate.
Economic theory suggests that two remedies to restore competitiveness – either a devaluation of Latvia's currency peg against the euro, or a fall in Latvia's wages and prices.

East Europe’s gross domestic product will shrink by 6 percent on average this year
The biggest declines (15 percent) will be in Latvia and Lithuania
Poland is forecast to contract by 3 percent. The Polish decline will be lead by a drop in industrial output that will help push the unemployment rate to close to 15 percent. Falling tax receipts will widen the fiscal gap to 5 percent of GDP, making the goal of euro adoption in 2012 unlikely
Hungary and Romania, which is negotiating external aid, will both shrink by 7.5 percent
Turkey will also shrink 7.5 percent
Ukraine’s and Estonia’s output will decline by 10 percent
