Working Time Directive: Parliament’s vote disastrous for Europe’s economy
By adopting the Employment Committee’s report on the Working Time Directive today, the European Parliament has taken a disastrous decision for European business.
The deletion of the ‘opt-out’ provision from the rule of the maximum working time of 48 hours per week will damage businesses’ flexibility and capacity to react to fluctuations in demand. This is particularly counter-productive in the light of the economic crisis. In addition, considering inactive on-call time as paid working time will hamper the effective provision of key public services across the EU, as well as having negative consequences on a number of private sectors. This will also put pressure on financing and lead to severe problems of work organisation in some work places. PRESS ROOM

Who we are
Created in 1958, EUROCHAMBRES is the European Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry and forms one of the key pillars of business representation to the European institutions.
EUROCHAMBRES voices the interests of over 19 million member enterprises in 45 European countries through a network of 2000 regional and local Chambers represented by 45 national and one transnational organisations. More than 90 % of these enterprises are Small or Medium Enterprises. Chamber members employ over 120 million employees.
EUROCHAMBRES is the sole European body that serves the interests of every sector and every size of European business - due to the multi sectoral membership of Chambers - and the only one so close to business, as a result of the Chambers’ regional focus.
